Essential elements are the specific chemical nutrients required by living organisms to survive, grow, and reproduce. Without them, an organism will experience developmental or metabolic abnormalities.
Depending on the biological context, they are categorized into distinct groups:
1. Human & Animal Biology
Humans require about 19 to 25 essential elements, which are divided into two main categories:
- Bulk Elements: Make up 96% to 99% of the human body's mass. These include Oxygen (O), Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H), and Nitrogen (N).
- Macrominerals & Trace Elements: Elements needed in smaller quantities, such as Calcium (Ca), Potassium (K), Iron (Fe), and Zinc (Zn).

2. Plant Nutrition
For plants to complete their life cycle, they require 17 essential elements, broadly classified into two groups:
